HISTORIC WINTHROP - Self Guided
This ride can piggyback on the group Diablo Lake ride, or stand alone. It is the signature North Cascades ride with a twist: instead of turning around at Washington Pass, you’ll keep the throttle open for another 35 scenic miles and roll into the old-west charm of Winthrop. Saddle up early—this is a full-day run that shows off every flavor of the North Cascades.
Start out from Sound H-D and head north on Highway 9, cutting across Old Day Creek Road and the South Skagit Highway before you reach the legendary North Cascades Highway. A good first stop would be at the large sign at the entrance to North Cascades National Park, with restrooms and a nice photo opp.
Keep riding and turn in at Diablo Lake Overlook. This is a must-stop for photos—glacial silt makes the lake glow like a jewel. From there the highway begins its sweeping climb to Washington Pass where craggy peaks rise around you like the Alps. Take a moment at the overlook to soak in the view.
Instead of turning back (the guided ride will loop back home from here), stay the course. As you descend from Washington Pass, the temperature warms and the landscape changes—pine forest gives way to golden hills. You’ll follow the Methow River, passing rustic dude ranches and fly-fishing spots on the way into Winthrop.
Winthrop greets you with wooden sidewalks, old-time storefronts, and the smell of fresh fudge and espresso. Slow down as you enter town and look left at the main intersection for parking—almost any spot will do. Three Finger Jack’s is a local favorite for lunch, but there’s also Carlos 1800, Sheree’s Ice Cream, a candy shop, gift stores, biker gear, and plenty of boardwalk strolling to do. Public restrooms are located right at the main intersection. If you need fuel before the return trip, there’s a Chevron on the east end of town just over the bridge.
Return Route
On the way back you’ll loop through Darrington, past the Oso Slide Memorial, and into Arlington before ending where you began. This ride covers a lot of miles and changing terrain, so plan accordingly—it’s best avoided on Saturdays (traffic) unless you’re up for a very long day in the saddle.
